Pros and cons

Pros

  • Corded, so it runs as long as you need with no battery to charge
  • Shielded 40 mm motor with built-in air cooling and a brass-and-polymer drive train
  • Fits every American Angler replacement blade, including curved and shark blades
  • 2-year limited warranty

Cons

  • Needs an outlet (110 V), so it's not for the boat
  • Only one 8-inch freshwater blade in the box; other blades cost extra
  • On Amazon it's sold by a third-party seller at $89.99, above American Angler's own $69.99 list price

Our review

American Angler's PRO is a corded electric knife built around its motor: a shielded 40 mm motor with a built-in 'Fanjet' air system to limit heat, and a transmission made of naval brass and polymers. American Angler claims 2x the torque and 4x the lifespan of other heavy-duty electric fillet knives. Those are the maker's claims, not our measurements.

Because it runs on mains power, there is no battery to run down, which matters when you're cleaning a cooler full of fish. The trade-off is the cord: you need a 110 V outlet, which rules it out on most boats.

The box includes the handset, one flexible, hollow-ground 8-inch freshwater blade (two reciprocating halves) and a ventilated mesh zipper bag. The handset accepts every American Angler replacement blade, including 8-inch curved and 'shark' blades sold separately. American Angler recommends hand washing.

Check the seller before you buy. When we checked, Amazon only had third-party sellers at $89.99, while American Angler's own site listed it at $69.99.
